booksIn a study released on Tuesday, The American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that parents read to their children – even very young children, every day.

Pamela High, a pediatrician who was one of the researchers on the study said that reading to your child every day builds a healthy, loving relationship between parent and child. Regularly reading to your also stimulates brain development, helping children to develop their speech and language abilities.

Because reading to children has been show to have a positive effect on development, and because children from low income families are significantly less likely to have parents who read to them, the Academy of Pediatrics announced they were partnering with Scholastic to give low income families access to books.

“Reach out and Read” is a non-profit organization started by medical professionals that will donate 500,000 books to low income families.
